Amazon’s Fire HD 8 brings Alexa to tablets

Amazon is continuing to branch out from its retailer roots as it creates more of its own hardware. The new Fire HD 8 tablet is another example of that, pairing an affordable price with Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant software that has previously been native only to the Echo line of speakers. While Amazon hasn’t outfitted the Fire HD 8 with flagship specs, it’s still capable enough to handle the usual demands of Fire tablets.

  • 8-inch 1280×800 display
  • Quad-core 1.3GHz processor
  • 1.5GB RAM
  • 16/32GB of storage plus microSD card slot
  • Front and rear-facing cameras
  • 4750mAh battery
  • Dolby stereo speakers
  • Fire OS 5
  • Amazon Alexa

The addition of Amazon’s Alexa serves as a key selling point for the Fire HD 8. Amazon’s voice assistant has developed rapidly, quickly becoming one of the most advanced options on the market. The company has also done a fantastic job of spreading the word about Alexa, even going so far as to feature the software in a Super Bowl commercial. With Alexa onboard, the Fire HD 8 packs another reason to purchase.

Alexa will be available on the new Fire HD 8, the Fire HD 10, Fire, and last year’s Fire HD 8 via a software update that’ll be released “in the coming months.”

Pricing begins at just $89.99 and is available for pre-order today, with orders shipping on September 21. Four color options of black, magenta, blue, and tangerine are available.
