The specs race continues on in the mobile tech world and the latest development is from Samsung, with the news that the company has begun to manufacture the world’s first 8Gb (gigabit) mobile LPDDR4 DRAM. The new DRAM effectively doubles the power of the current 4Gb LPDDR3 DRAM that’s being used in smartphones. It’s manufactured with Samsung’s 20nm process and is more efficient, allowing it to use 40 percent less power than the current DDR3 DRAM.
The real importance of this is that it opens the door for 4GB (gigabyte) LPDRR4 RAM packages in modern smartphones. With that, it wouldn’t surprise us to see a 4GB LPDDR4 RAM package in either the Galaxy S6 or the next Galaxy Note device. The extra RAM will be appreciated, particularly as screens grow to higher resolutions and apps become more demanding.
