Light-field camera startup Lytro is rumored to be preparing to release their own Android powered camera in the coming months.
Light-field technology essentially replaces standard lens-sensors with a number of micro-lenses that capture the scene from multiple angles. This allows for improved refocusing and faster image capture.
A few Android device manufacturers have attempted to replicate light-field cameras in the past. Samsung, Sony and Google are a few companies that have created software that aims to replicate the new camera technology.
This product would be Lytro’s third release so far, after a “point and shoot” camera, and the Illum, a larger camera that’s aimed at professionals. The technology behind Lytro could even make the jump to smartphones in the near future.
