Just a few hours before the registration period for Google I/O 2014 was scheduled to open, Google decided to move the start of the registration period to April 15.
Google Developers also announced that the original two-day registration period will be extended by two more days. The new registration period will now begin on April 15 and end on April 18. Registration for this year’s Google I/O event was supposed to begin today, April 8, and end on April 10.
Google Developers announced the delay and the new schedule in a Google+ post saying that developers are “still working to make the registration process even easier” for interested parties.
Google I/O is the annual gathering of awesome boys and girls to talk about awesome stuff developer-focused assembly that brings together not just programmers and developers but also Google fans to discuss web, mobile, and enterprise technologies and solutions. This year’s conference will be held on June 25 and June 26 at Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco, California.
Despite the delay, the company will pursue its intention to use a different registration procedure this year, one that is expected to open up the conference to a wider and broader audience. Instead of using the common first-come-first-served approach, Google will be using the lottery or raffle method, which entails selecting participants randomly from the list of registrants after the registration period ends on April 18.
New registration process
The new registration process means that you won’t need to risk bruising yourself or getting a heart attack from rushing madly to be in line before the seat slots run out. You can register anytime during the registration period.
If you’re thinking of registering, make sure that you’ve set up your Google+ account and Google Wallet. The latter is needed for paying for your ticket. At registration, you will need to authorize Google to charge your Wallet account automatically if you are approved or selected to attend the conference.
Ticket prices
Google has not announced any change to the prices. General admission tickets cost US$900 each. But, you can avail yourself of the special academic admission ticket priced at only US$300 if you are any of the following:
- full-time student at a high school or higher education institution;
- professor or faculty member at a high school or higher education institution;
- staff at a high school or higher education institution; or
- fresh graduate this year.
If you qualify for academic ticket pricing, make sure you bring proof or documentation (e.g, school ID, transcript, credential, and the like) during check-in at the conference, otherwise you will not be admitted. Academic tickets cannot be converted to general admission tickets.
A Google I/O ticket may only be used by the person it is issued to and may not be resold. To be able to claim your Google I/O badge during check-in at the conference, you will need to present a photo ID.
