Samsung may have to move the Galaxy S 5 launch earlier due to South Korean carrier punishment

Yesterday, we talked about the situation in South Korea in which a few carriers were punished for subsidizing devices by more than $250. The South Korean government brought down the hammer on three of the country’s biggest carriers and will not allow them to sell any smartphones for a 45-day period. The Galaxy S 5′s global launch date is April 11 in roughly 150 countries.

So what are the carriers and Samsung left to do? Reports out of Samsung’s home country suggest that the company will release the device prior to April 5. This is because it would give South Korea’s largest carrier, SK Telecom, a chance to sell the handset before its punishment (or ban) kicks in on that date. LG U+, another carrier in that country, would be able to sell the device for about two weeks if the April 11 launch sticks since their punishment does not start until the end of that month. Samsung is reportedly scrambling to move the launch date to this Thursday, March 27.
