Thanks to the NSA, privacy might be the biggest buzzword right now. A lot of people are concerned about who could be reading their emails. If you’re using Gmail, you might sleep better tonight after you read about the changes that Google has made.
The first change is that Gmail will always use an encrypted HTTPS. HTTPS has always been supported, but with the addition of encryption, nobody will be able to listen to your messages, even if you are using a public Wi-Fi. This goes for computers, phones, and tablets.
The second big change is that Google will encrypt every single email as it moves internally. This would obviously be for all emails that you send or receive. What’s important here is that your emails are not only encrypted within Gmail’s servers, but also when traveling through Google’s data centers.
Google also shared that it’s important that Gmail has limited downtime. Nothing is 100%, but Google achieved an up time of 99.978% in 2013, which translates to a less than 2 hours of disruption per person for the entire year. Not bad.
Are you feeling better about sending that next email?
