Facebook rolling out auto-play video ads to desktop and mobile

Facebook seems to think Google+ is onto something with news feeds full of moving stuff instead of a static presentation and is now preparing to go down that path with advertisements. According to Facebook, they have been testing a new system for the display of videos so that they start playing automatically in a user’s News Feed without any action by a user. The videos are shown without sound unless a user taps on the video. Thus far Facebook’s use of this system has been limited to videos shared by individuals and they claim it increases interaction by 10%. Not content to limit this function to users of the service, Facebook is getting ready to make this new format available to advertisers on Facebook.

According to Facebook they are currently testing the system in conjunction with Summit Entertainment and a series of videos for the upcoming film Divergent . As part of this system, it appears Facebook plans to have their app pre-fetch content while a user is connected to Wi-Fi so the video won’t be a drain on data plans. It is not clear whether users will be able to turn off this feature or otherwise prevent Facebook from downloading this data in the background.

Are you looking forward to video ads in the Facebook News Feed on mobile devices?
