After launching in beta form back in August and then getting its Chromecast support killed off by Google, Koushik Dutta’s AirCast app officially landed in the Google Play Store today. The app allows users to wirelessly beam the photos and videos stored on their Android device to a television. The list of devices that can receive content from AllCast include the Roku, Apple TV, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, Google TV, DLNA renderers and smart TVs from Panasonic and Samsung.
Obviously it’s kind of a bummer that Chromecast support was pulled from AllCast, especially since Google’s $35 stick is cheaper than most of the other devices that are compatible with the app. The list of supported products is a good size, though, and many folks likely already have one of them already hooked up to their television for Netflix or some other streaming service.
The AllCast app itself sports a clean, white interface with a list of playback devices that includes icons to make each one easily identifiable. Overall it looks like a pretty nice package, and the good news is that Dutta is planning to make the app even better by adding music support soon and Chromecast support whenever Google allows it. AllCast requires Android 4.0 or higher and is now available as a free download from Google Play. A premium version that comes without ads, splash screens or video length limits is available for $4.99.
