The Android 5.0 Lollipop code has been released and all the manufacturers are starting to announce their update plans. Sony is the latest manufacturer to disclose plans regarding Android 5.0 Lollipop, and it has some interesting news. First of all, Sony currently has AOSP Android 5.0 running on the Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3. The AOSP files for the devices aren’t available just yet, but Sony says that they’ll be released through Sony Developer World as soon as possible.
Sony is also launching a new beta program in Sweden called 3Beta. This will allow owners of the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact to test out early versions of Android 5.0 Lollipop that have Sony’s UX added on top. These testers can then report bugs and other issues to Sony, allowing Sony to iron all of them out before a commercial rollout of Lollipop early next year. Sony also mentioned that if the program is successful in Sweden, they’ll consider rolling out 3Beta to more countries and devices.
Finally, Sony said that the entire Xperia Z line of devices will receive Android 5.0 Lollipop, unless an exception has to be made for a carrier or market, which is unlikely. Timing for the release of the Lollipop update hasn’t been disclosed, but it’s safe to assume that it should take place early next year.
