To grow its Advanced Technology and Products department, Motorola has hired Disney Research’s Dr. Ivan Poupyrev. While working with Disney, Poupyrev worked at Disney’s Carnegie Mellon laboratory as a scientist. He designed Swept Frequency Capacitive Sensing. It allows a single wire to give objects human touch sensitivity. For example, he created a potted plant that would sing upon being touched on its stem or leaves.

At Motorola, he will join former DARPA director Regina Dugan. If you can recall, Dugan introduced some interesting projects that her department is working on at the D11 conference last year. The Advanced Technology and Products department was also behind Motorola’s flagship Moto X smartphone. While it has not done well commercially, it has certainly been praised. Poupyrev told Fast Company that he “can help shape the future of the company.” It should be interesting to see what Poupyrev and Motorola have in store for the future.
